StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty is the widely anticipated sequel to the highly successful StarCraft which enthralled players for many years.

The StarCraft games are real time strategy games where a player harvests resources to build units and structures which then are used to fight against an opponent in order to win a map. There are three races present in the StarCraft universe, the Human Terrans, Alien Protoss, and insect-like Zerg. Each of these races has different strengths and weaknesses that the player must exploit properly in order to win. For instance, the Zerg are weaker and less heavily armored than the Terrans or Protoss, but they build rapidly and can overwhelm the other races with sheer force of numbers.

It is important to realise that StarCraft 2 is a game in three parts. The first part, released July 2010, gives players the Terran campaign. The Protoss and Zerg campaigns will be released each a year apart according to the games maker, Blizzard. However, it is just the single player campaign that is having a staged release. If you like PvP you will not be disappointed. You can play all three factions out of the box from this release.

So far, the game has been very well recieved by both the players and gaming sites. Blizzard have not done what so many other game developers have done and changed the formula. StarCraft 2 plays very much the same as StarCraft, with only a few changes made to make the experience better. This means that if you have played StarCraft, then you'll be able to jump right in without too many problems.

One thing that is not apparent though is that some of the units now behave a little differently than they used to, and for a proficient StarCraft player this can lead to some confusion. It's not a big deal though, all you need to do is to take your time and learn the ropes, or if you have the inclination, but a StarCraft 2 guide. Whatever you choose, I have no doubt you'll do well.

While the campaigns are a big lure of the StarCraft 2 games, they are very well developed with the Terran campaign having a very Firefly feel, the biggest area that SC2 excels in is the PvP. At any time, there are plenty of players online waiting to whip other players who dare to challenge them. Blizzard provide a ladder system that ranks players on how well they do against others.

PvP Matchmaking is also well handled with the game matching players against those with similar skills. As a newby, you won't be matched against the top ranking players. This ensures that all PvP matches are reasonably fair, and that you have a good chance of winning any particular game.

StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty is another winner from Blizzard. If you enjoy the RTS genre, you'll find it well worth getting.
