StarCraft 2 Day 1 Recap

StarCraft 2 Day 1 Recap
by Kyle Magee | Published: April 02, 2011 03:49 AM EST
The first day of Starcraft 2 action is in the books. With a mix of favorite movings on and upsets shaking up the brackets in both the Pool play and Open Bracket, Friday was an exciting day for Starcraft 2. Let's take a look at how everything breaks down as we head into Day 2.
The Top 4 seeds heading into Pool play had a very strong showing for the most part. Kiwikaki, Select and Drewbie all finished 3-0 in their Pools today, and are looking poised to earn a spot in the Championship Winners Bracket. PainUser, coming in as the #3 seed, struggled a bit with a 1-2 start. PainUser has made his name on the Pro Circuit for his runs late in the tournament, though, so he can't be counted out yet. InControl and Slush currently hold a share of the lead in his group at 2-1 on the day.
After dominating in Dallas at the end of last Season, Team Liquid had a very disappointing showing in Pool play on Friday. Ret finished the day 0-3, while TLO and Tyler were both 1-2.
Full Pool Standings:
Pool A
Kiwikaki 3-0
Idra 2-1
Socke 1-2
Gretorp 0-3
Pool B
Select 3-0
Sjow 2-1
Qxc 1-2
Ret 0-3
Pool C
Slush 2-1
InControl 2-1
PainUser 1-2
TLO 1-2
Pool D
Drewbie 3-0
Machine 2-1
Tyler 1-2
Agh 1-2
In the Open Bracket, 16 players remain looking to secure a Top 4 finish and earn a spot in Pool play tomorrow. Sixjax has been performing very well so far, and the two favorites from Team Liquid, Haypro and Huk, are still in the running. Two of the top Europeans heading into the Open Bracket, Naniwa and Grubby, are alive as well. The eight matches that will kick off Open Bracket action on Day 2 are:
Huk v Moonan
Spades v KawaiiRice
OptikZero v Hawk248
Haypro v Nkulunkulu
LzGamer v SixjaxVibe
Naniwa v TriMaster
SixjaxMihai v ThisIsJimmy
SixJaxDDE v Grubby
Some of the notable exits from the Open Bracket on Day 1 included Axslav, StrifeCro, Cruncher, Catz, Sheth, Fenix, Naama and Inka. A list that talented just goes to show how tough this Open Bracket is.
The Starcraft 2 action resumes tomorrow at 10 AM, so make sure to tune in as the Open Bracket comes to a close and Pool play continues to heat up!
